Marketing – Introduction and Lesson Agenda
Welcome, everyone, and thank you for joining me today for this workshop on Marketing Secrets of the Licensing Pros. It’s nine o’clock now, so we’ll get started. I truly appreciate you making the time to join this session.
This workshop was created to address a common challenge—how to effectively market your intellectual property (IP) as a licensing opportunity. Many people find this process difficult, so today we’ll focus on strategies to present your IP in a way that resonates with potential licensing partners.
Setting the Stage
Before we get into the details, it’s important to understand that marketing is actually the second phase of the licensing process. The initial phase involves preparing your IP to ensure it is in a position to be licensable. This step includes refining your intellectual property to maximize its appeal and potential for licensing opportunities. I’ve covered this foundational stage extensively in previous workshops, on my blog, and during individual coaching sessions.
For today, we’ll assume that your IP is already prepared for licensing. Our focus will shift toward the next step, which is marketing that opportunity effectively. This can be a challenging task, particularly because the type of information required is different from what you might use for other business purposes, such as building a business plan, selling products, or fundraising.
Areas of Focus
Here’s what we’ll be covering in today’s session:
- Crafting Your Marketing Message – We’ll explore how to develop a clear, engaging message that aligns with your licensing objectives.
- Building a Marketing Plan – We’ll outline key components of a structured and actionable marketing strategy designed for licensing success.
- Execution and Implementation – A step-by-step breakdown of how to put your plan into action, ensuring all operational elements are aligned.
- Follow-Up and Tracking – We’ll discuss techniques to monitor your marketing efforts, measure progress, and adjust your strategy as needed.
Each of these areas plays a critical role in successfully marketing your IP to potential licensing partners.
Common Challenges
One of the biggest hurdles people face when marketing their IP is understanding the type of information required for licensing. Many often confuse this with the information needed for general business operations or product sales. Licensing-specific information must be tailored to demonstrate the value and potential of your intellectual property in a licensing context.
It’s also essential to carefully manage how much information you share upfront. I’ll guide you on how to strategically present your IP without disclosing everything. Additionally, I’ll explain why non-disclosure agreements (NDAs) are not always necessary at the marketing stage and provide alternative methods to safeguard your innovations.
Workshop Logistics
For those of you joining us live, I’ll be sharing slides throughout the session. If for any reason you encounter issues viewing them, please use the chat feature to notify me. You can also use the chat to submit any questions related to today’s topic or other IP marketing challenges. I’ll address your inquiries during the session or in the Q&A at the end.
Thank you once again for joining. Let’s begin!
What We’ll Cover
Today, we’ll be covering several key areas. I’ll start with a quick introduction for anyone new here. Then, we’ll dive into the first section: setting up your marketing. This involves understanding your IP, its value drivers, and the market. It’s a critical step that focuses on the value your IP offers—both to potential licensing partners and the broader market. We’ll explore how to determine this value and how to leverage it effectively.
Next, we’ll discuss best practices for writing marketing content. This section focuses on how to structure and configure your information for different channels and tools. How you present your information can greatly impact your response rate. We’ll cover how much detail to include, as well as strategies to ensure your message is clear and compelling.
We’ll also look at marketing voice by channel. There are various channels you can use to share your message, and I’ll walk you through how to adapt your IP value messaging for each one. Understanding how to tailor your voice for every channel will help ensure your message resonates.
Yes, to answer a common question—slides and the full presentation will be available for download. I’ll share details on how to access them at the end.
After discussing marketing channels, we’ll move on to setting up a follow-up system. Follow-up is essential for a successful licensing campaign, as it often takes time to yield results. Licensing isn’t a fast-moving process, and many factors can delay responses. However, a consistent follow-up system keeps you on track and increases your chances of success. You might not hear back immediately, but I’ve seen cases where companies respond months or even years later, as market dynamics and priorities shift.
Finally, we’ll wrap up with a Q&A. Feel free to post questions in the chat as we go, and I’ll address them if they fit in context. Otherwise, we’ll have a dedicated time for questions at the end of the presentation.
